Here are the top 10 tips you need to know when hunting barbarians and marauders in Rise of Kingdoms. Hunting barbarians (widely known as "barbs" amongst players) and even Marauders (a level 25-ish barbarian that will appear before Kingdom-vs-Kingdom content comes on), is an activity that you will engage in a lot in the popular mobile game Rise of Kingdoms. Players carry out the hunting several times daily, to expend their otherwise wasted Action Points ("AP") to accomplish daily quests and to earn experience for their Commanders. The tips I am about to share with you here will help you to optimize your barbarian-hunting and aid your progress in the game, slowly but surely. Here are the top 10 tips you need to know when hunting barbarians and marauders: 1. Expend your AP, do not let them go to waste Tick, tock. Tick, tock. You need Action Points to hunt barbs in ROK, and you recover AP over time (1 AP every 31 seconds for me with recovery speed bonus), but your AP bar has a cap of 1,000 AP. This means that if your AP bar is full, you do not gain any more AP with every passing minute. If you are not expending them, you are wasting them. So put them to good use and hunt some barbarians! 2. Once troop is dispatched, avoid unnecessary trips back to city during the hunt Once you dispatch a troop from your city, it costs 50 AP for the dispatched troop to launch its first attack on a barbarian. Each subsequent attack by your troop on the next 10 barbarians will cost 2 AP less than the attack before. By the 11th barbarian, it will cost 30 AP to attack. Thereafter, subsequent attacks on barbarians will cost 30 AP each. However, if your troop returns to your city, the next attack on a barbarian by your troop will cost 50 AP again. This means the more barbarians your troop defeats out in the fields before returning to your city, the higher is the efficiency in the use of your AP. Note that this assumes that you pick the right level of barbarians to attack, and that your troop has good survivability (as a failed battle will still cost you AP, and gives you no reward). 3. Use Peacekeeping Commanders as your troops' Primary Commanders All Commanders with the Peacekeeping Talent have a Talent ability "Insight", which reduces the AP cost to attack barbarians by up to 10 AP. This means that your troop's first attack on a barbarian will only cost you 40 AP instead of 50 AP, and the AP cost will be reduced to the minimum of 30 AP by it's 6th attack on a barbarian. You will save 230 AP (50 + 48 + 46 + 44 + 42) per troop by using Peacekeeping Commanders. Besides, Peacekeeping Commanders also have other Talent abilities like "Quick Study", which increases experience gained from defeating barbarians by up to 15%, as well as "Domination" and "Killer Instinct" which increases damage dealt to barbarians. 4. Defeat neutral units before starting your barbarian hunt Here's the trick. Locate your city near a Sanctum, Shrine or Temple. A total of 10 neutral units (Guardians) spawn at these structures twice every day. It does not cost any AP to attack these neutral units, and they give very good experience for your Commanders - experience gained for defeating a guardian is higher than what you can get from a barbarian. The trick is, before you embark on your barbarian hunt, send all your troops to attack and defeat a Guardian, and repeat this for a total of 5 Guardians. At the end of this, do not send your troops back to your city. Proceed to your barbarian-hunting and you will notice that your first barbarian attack will cost 30 AP for each of your troops that are led by Peacekeeping Commanders as the Primary Commander (40 AP for troops led by non-Peacekeeping Commanders as the Primary Commander). This is because, similar with defeating barbarians, defeating neutral units do also reduce the AP cost by 2 AP for the next attack (although if you recall, it does not cost any AP to attack neutral units!). This explains why you will need to defeat 5 Guardians (5 x 2 AP = 10 AP) before commencing on your barbarian hunt. 5. Allow your AP bar to restore fully before starting a hunt The logic for this is simple. You will want to attack as many barbarians as possible at the lowest cost of 30 AP. To do this, it is best that your AP bar is at its fullest. 6. Use more troops to hunt the same barbarian Although using more troops to hunt at the same time will mean that your AP will deplete quicker, it allows barbarians to be defeated more quickly as a result of higher troop power, which reduces the total damage suffered by your troops resulting in less injured soldiers and higher survivability for your troops. Most importantly, even though your troops have defeated the same barbarian, they do not need to "share" the experience and rewards. Instead, each of your troops will receive experience and rewards as if it has single-handedly defeated the barbarian. Isn't that fantastic? 7. Hunt with other players The logic here is similar to having more of your troops to attack the same barbarian target. The more troops from other players are joining you in the attack against the barbarian, the less damage will be sustained, and the longer everyone survives in the open field. The challenge here is to get other players to join you in your barbarian-hunting. Joining an active alliance is the key. 8. Equip your Primary Commanders with equipment that boost damage to barbarians Once you have unlocked the Blacksmith structure in your city, make sure you forge equipment that has the following attribute: There are a total of 6 equipment slots (helm, chest armor, bracers, trousers, boots and weapon) that you can equip with equipment forged from the Blacksmith with the above attribute, giving each troop a boost to damage to barbarians of up to 18%. Note that equipment works only on Primary Commanders. 9. Use a Primary Commander with the Infantry Talent to take damage from the barbarian Barbarians on the open field only attack single target and do not have any area-of-effect attacks that can deal damage to multiple targets. Once attacked, barbarians will retaliate against the source of the first damage dealt against them, and they do not switch their target focus during battle. This means that you would be wise to pick a tough and tanky Commander to lead the troop that will be launching the first attack against the barbarian. In most cases, this should be a Commander with the Infantry Talent, as infantry units are more adept at sustaining damage than archer and cavalry units. 10. Grab Runes before starting the hunt Before you embark on your barbarian hunt, it would be a good idea to take a look at the type of Runes available at the Sanctum, Shrine or Temple near your city. These Runes appear at the location of each defeated Guardian and they are available for all players for a limited time duration. The Runes offer random boosts including increased AP recovery rate, increased Commander EXP gain rate, increased troop attack or defense etc., all of which will help to increase the efficiency of your barbarian hunting.
