The Pokémon Cosmog can evolve into Cosmoem and then into 2 different final evolutions: Solgaleo and Lunala. However, players currently can only choose to evolve Cosmoem into 1 evolution form. Niantic hinted that another way to catch Cosmog will be released in Pokémon GO in the “distant future”. “Distant future” could mean anything (e.g. a Pokémon’s lifespan – well beyond your lifetime), so you will still want to choose wisely which evolution to evolve Cosmoem into. In this post, I will show you which one to choose to evolve into in Pokémon GO.
With 100 Cosmog Candies, you can evolve Cosmoem into Solgaleo during the day, or Lunala at night.
Solgaleo and Lunala have the same stats (attack, defense, stamina) and maximum CP. Their only difference is in their Pokémon Type: Solgaleo is Psychic/Steel, while Lunala is Psychic/Ghost.
As a Psychic Steel type, Solgaleo is weak against a total of 4 types: Ground, Ghost, Fire and Dark.
As a Psychic Ghost type, Lunala is weak against a total of 2 types: Ghost and Dark.
At this point, you might jump to the conclusion that Lunala is the better pick.
However, remember the saying that “Attack is the best form of Defense”?
As a Psychic Steel type, Solgaleo is strong against a total of 10 types: Normal, Flying, Rock, Steel, Grass, Ice, Dragon, Fairy, Poison, Psychic.
As a Psychic Ghost type, Lunala is strong against a total of 4 types: Poison, Psychic, Normal, Fighting.
As there are a total of 18 Pokémon Types in Pokémon GO (and even more if you consider the number of hybrids there are), Solgaleo will more frequently have a Type advantage in battle than Lunala. This makes Solgaleo a better investment when you consider using him in Raids or Gyms – as the opposing Pokémon Type is known to you and you can pick which Pokémon to send to battle to.
My ranking of Pokémon in the Master League also supports the view that Solgaleo is more effective in battles than Lunala.
