The Hero of Neva River
(1221 – 1263) – 42 years
Rarity: LEGENDARY
Civilization: Russia
Talents:
Alexander Nevsky was a political and military leader and strategist of 13th century Russia who not only protected his people from German and Swedish invaders but also adroitly preserved Russia’s independence with skillful foreign diplomacy against the unprecedented threat of Genghis Khan’s “Golden Horde”.
Alexander Nevsky’s first major victory against Russia’s invaders came in 1240 where Russian troops defeated a large Swedish incursion on the banks of the Neva River. This substantial victory brought considerable prestige and political clout to Alexander, who soon found himself known as the “Hero of the Neva River”.
Alexander Nevsky was forced to content with another powerful invasion in the form of the Teutonic Knights just the following year, which he managed to defeat at the head of his Novgorod forces in a decisive victory atop the frozen waters of Lake Peipus near Estonia, which became known as the “Battle on the Ice”. Alexander’s victory here effectively spelled the end of the Teutonic Knights’ dreams of eastward conquest, and proved a substantial encouragement to Russia’s growing military might.
Alexander Nevsky’s next challenge came in the form of the “nigh-on unstoppable” Golden Horde of the Mongols. Alexander played the role of skillful diplomat and peacemaker between the Mongolians and Russia’s various republics against the Pope’s urging, thus preserving his Slavic union. Unfortunately, Alexander’s later death proved too much for the fraying cords binding these republics together, which soon fractured once again into quarreling states. Alexander has since become a well-venerated figure of Russian Church by the Metropolite Macarius, and his heroic status would be called upon time and time again in later years – for example by Stalin who referred to Alexander as the “People’s Hero”.

Best Commander Pairings for Alexander Nevsky:
- Open-field: Huo Qubing (Nevsky as secondary commander) – Highest single-target damage combo.
- Rally: Justinian I
- Open-field/Rally: Joan Prime (Nevsky as primary commander)
- Open-field/Rally: Xiang Yu (Nevsky as secondary commander) – this is the glass-cannon commander combo (deal highest damage but also take highest damage from enemies). Note that Xiang Yu as primary commander is currently the most targeted target in KvK open-field fighting.
- Open-field: Saladin (Saladin as primary commander) – This is a “value” commander combo, as you only need Saladin to be at 5551 to be good enough for this to work. Saladin’s Support talent allows active skills to fire off more frequently (due to “Burning Blood” and “Rejuvenate” talents, which gives more Rage), which works very well when combined with Nevsky’s massive active skill damage. The Support talent also provides protection against skill damage (“Loose Formation” – 9% skill damage reduction), which increases the survivability of the troop. Saladin also increases the survivability of the troop with his second skill (20% cavalry defense bonus) and third skill (30% skill damage taken reduction and 20% counterattack damage taken reduction).
- Open-field: Chandragupta Maurya (Chandragupta as primary commander) – When Chandragupta is the primary commander, his active skill triggers first, which provides a 40% increased damage boost. This triggered active skill of Chandragupta’s will then trigger Nevsky’s fourth skill (which provides an extra 35% skill damage boost for 4 seconds upon casting an active skill), which will then be followed by the triggering of Nevsky’s active skill of 2300 Damage Factor buffed by the two damage boosts stated above. Further, Chandragupta increases the survivability of the troop with his third skill (20% cavalry health bonus) and also inflicts health and defense reduction to the target.
- Open-field: Mehmed II (Nevsky as primary commander) – Mehmed complements Nevsky with the following boosts: Mehmed’s Relic adds 20% Troop Health and 5% Skill Damage; Mehmed’s fourth skill provides 10% troop capacity bonus; Mehmed’s second skill provides 20% increased attack and 20% extra skill damage; Mehmed’s primary skill deals 1150 Damage Factor (1350 when Expertised) to up to 5 targets. All the above benefits increase the survivability and skill damage of Nevsky.
- Open-field: Minamoto no Yoshitsune (Nevsky as primary commander) – Minamoto’s Relic adds a boost of 20% Cavalry Defense and 25% Cavalry Attack – a massive boost to Nevsky in terms of damage and survivability in the open-field battling. Minamoto also deals great single-target damage – Damage Factor of 1400 + 50% chance (75% when Expertised) for extra damage per second (Damage Factor 600). Lastly, Minamoto’s fourth skill provides a debuff to enemies (10% chance to increase damage taken by the target by 30% for 3 seconds) which can be devastating when combined with Nevsky’s high skill damage.
- Open-field: William I (Nevsky as primary commander) – William’s active skill removes enemies’ extra skill damage boosts and reduces their march speed, which is very important in the latest KvK open-field battle environment, with new commander like Scipio/Nevsky/Boudica Prime dealing massive damage aided by secondary commanders who provide skill damage buffs.
- Barbarian fort rally: Minamoto no Yoshitsune (Minamoto as primary commander)
- Sunset Canyon: Honda Tadakatsu (Nevsky as primary commander)
