Rise of Kingdoms: Ashurbanipal – Skills, Talent Trees and Best Pairings

King of Assyria

Civilization: Assyria

Ashurbanipal ruled the Neo-Assyrian Empire from 669 to 627 BCE. Under his rule, Assyria reached the height of its territorial extend and military might.

Ashurbanipal succeeded his father Esarhaddon to the throne. Though he had inherited a might empire, he was not content to rest on his laurels. During his reign, he fought countless wars of expansion, extending Assyria’s already-vast territory into Egypt and Anatolia.

For all of Ashurbanipal’s military accomplishments, Assyria was in its twilight years, and beset by countless rebellions. He turned his attention inwards, suppressing internal dissent with an iron fist and rivers of blood. Ultimately, this did little to reverse Assyria’s decline, which would only hasten after Ashurbanipal’s death.

Empires may die, but civilizations live on. Over the course of his long reign, he devoted considerable resources to constructing the Library of Ashurbanipal, where he amassed a collection of texts so vast that it would not be surpassed until the Library of Alexandria , some 400 years later.

The Library was eventually destroyed in a fire, but since all of its texts were inscribed on clay tablets, this actually helped preserve them by hardening the clay. This mountain of invaluable knowledge lay undisturbed until the 19th century, when it was discovered by archaeologists. Among its many treasures was the now-famous Epic of Gilgamesh.
