Flavius Aetius – Skills, Talent Trees and Commander Pairs 2022

Patrician of Rome

(AD 390 – 454) – 64 years

Civilization: Rome

Flavius Aetius was a patrician of Rome who led troops into victory against the Huns, the Franks, the Burgundians, and the Goths, and has often been called “the Last of the Romans”.

Aetius was a tragic hero during the twilight years of the western Roman Empire. He supported and served the Empire through 20 years of crisis. Over two decades, he suppressed rebellions in Gaul, destroyed the kingdom established by the Burgundians in present-day Worms, and beat the Visigoths in Toulouse before allying with them to defeat Attila at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains.

Thanks to his efforts, the people of the Western Roman Empire enjoyed a period of relative security, but despite this, he was unable to prevent its eventual collapse. In 454 CE, Aetius met with Emperor Valentinian. Following an argument, Valentinian drew his sword and killed him. Aetius did not die a hero’s death on the battlefield, but instead fell to the blade of a cowardly emperor.
