Gorgo reigned as Queen of Sparta in the early 5th century BCE. She ruled Sparta alongside her husband Leonidas I, and played an important role in the war against the invading Persian Empire. Under the reign of the Achaemenids, Persia had grown into a gargantuan empire, and sought to expand its reach into the central Mediterranean. Led by Leonidas I and Gorgo, the Spartans stalled the Persians at Thermopylae, buying time for the Athenian navy and playing a key role in Greece’s eventual victory.
Much has been written about Gorgo in historical records, at a time when even important women were often confined to footnotes and margins. This speaks volumes about her significant influence over Spartan politics and her prestige in the eyes of her contemporaries. It is said that, at just eight years old, she was already providing advice to her father, then the king of Sparta. After she became queen, it was she who first discovered the Persians’ impending invasion.
