Jadwiga of Poland, also known as Hedwig, was born in 1373, and crowned the first female monarch of Poland at the age of 11. Well-liked by the church for her piety, loved by the people for her kindness, and by the nobility for her gentle nature, Jadwiga was able to successfully devote her life to consolidating alliances and keeping Poland safe.
After the death of her father in 1382, Jadwiga was selected by the Archbishop of Krakow and crowned “King of Poland” in 1384. In order to gain territory and spread her religion, Jadwiga married the Lithuanian ruler Jogaila on the condition that he convert and encourage his people to do the same, thus establishing a centuries-long alliance between Poland and Lithuania.
Jadwiga and Jogaila solved many difficult problems as joint rulers of their land. They resolved a long-standing conflict with the Teutonic Knights, persuaded Jogaila’s cousin to give up his claim to the Lithuanian throne, and in 1387 regained the territory of Ruthenia. Jadwiga also supported a number of religious and academic endeavors, and funded the establishment of many colleges and universities.
Jadwiga died in childbirth in 1399, but in her short lifetime, accomplished much for the spread of Catholicism in Europe, and the security of Poland. The Roman Catholic Church canonized her (declared her to be a saint) in 1997.
