Emperor Wu of Han
Rarity: LEGENDARY
Talents:
Emperor Wu of Han, born Liu Che, ascended the Dragon Throne at the age of 16. The seventh emperor of the Western Han dynasty, Liu Che ruled over China for 53 years, the third-longest reign in Chinese history.
Liu Che inherited an extremely wealthy empire, and leveraged this wealth to greatly expand the Han dynasty’s borders. His many conquests are reflected in his posthumous name “Emperor Wu”, “wu” meaning “martial” or “warlike” in Chinese. However, years of warfare inevitably placed a heavy burden on the empire, and in his later years he focused more on internal reforms. These reforms laid the groundwork for the golden age that would follow. One of Liu Che’s edicts enforced “partition” succession for the great princes of the empire. Upon their deaths, their holdings would have to be distributed amongst their children, gradually reducing the size of their fiefdoms and their influence over the empire. He also replaced the old system of hereditary bureaucrats with an early form of the imperial examination system, which would have massive implications for rest of Chinese history.
