Pakal the Great – K’inich Janaab’ Pakal, otherwise known as “Pakal the Great” (born 603 CE, died 683 CE) was ajaw (or ‘king’) over the important western Mayan border city-state of Palenque during the late classical Mesoamerican period.
Pakal the Great successfully brought about a major revival in the fortunes of the waning Palenque during his lengthy 68-year reign, cementing his unrivalled authority and status across the western Mayan empire. Palenque also went on to achieve hitherto unknown feats of architecture and engineering during this period.
Mexican archaeologists stumbled upon a passageway while studying an ancient temple in the ruins of Palanque which was found to connect to Pakal’s mausoleum underneath after a lengthy 3-year excavation. This prompted a shift in the consensus view that the Mayan pyramids were, unlike the Egyptian pyramids, used for religious worship and not as places of burial.
A diagram featured on the lid of the sarcophagus bears something of a resemblance to a modern spaceship also stirred considerable attention and discussion. Historians and archaeologists are still divided on the exact meaning of the image, but the scholarly consensus is that it just happened to have been a rather common religious pattern at the time.
