King of Epirus
Rarity: LEGENDARY
Civilization: Greece
Talents:
Pyrrhus (319/318 – 272 BCE) was the king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Epirus, an eminent military strategist, and one of early Rome’s chief rivals for dominion over the Italian peninsula. He was born in the Hellenistic world after the conquests and death of Alexander the Great, a time when Greece was the center of the western world and new city-states were flourishing. Looming over them, however, was the threat of the nascent Roman Republic. Pyrrhus made his small realm a force to be reckoned with through military development and outward expansion.
Pyrrhus led a troubled early life. His father was overthrown when he was a child, but he was able to return home and reclaim his throne with the help of an Illyrian king, though he would later be dethroned once again. With the outbreak of the Fourth War of the Diadochi, the 18-year old Pyrrhus acquitted himself well at the Battle of Ipsus, but was nonetheless defeated and captured. With the support of Ptolemy I Soter, ruler of Egypt (and his captor), Pyrrhus reconquered Epius and later a large portion of Macedonia.
Pyrrhus is best known for his war against Rome, battling them for control of southern Italy with an army that even included elephants. At the Battle of Ausculum, Pyrrhus won a very costly victory against the Romans, giving rise to the phrase “Pyrrhic victory” (a victory that costs the victor dearly). Pyrrhus’ military acumen was no doubt outstanding, and he was considered one of the finest strategists of his era by his contemporaries. However, his efforts did naught to prevent the eventual fate of ancient Greece, which would over time be invaded and conquered by Rome.
Review of Commander Pyrrhus:
- Pyrrhus is good for early-game but loses competitiveness in end-game.
- Pyrrhus is one of the best infantry commander in 1v1 duels.
