Sun Tzu was a Chinese general, military strategist, writer, and philosopher who lived in the Eastern Zhou period of ancient China. Sun Tzu is traditionally credited as the author of The Art of War, a widely influential work of military strategy that has affected both Western and East Asian philosophy and military thinking. Sun Tzu’s work has been praised and employed throughout East Asian warfare since its composition. During the twentieth century, The Art of War grew in popularity and saw practical use in Western society as well. It continues to influence many competitive endeavors in East Asia and the Western World including culture, politics, business, and sports, as well as modern warfare.

Sun Tzu Commander Skills:

Art of War – Deals damage to up to 3 targets in a fan-shaped area by a factor of 450, and deals additional damage to the target(s) on the next turn by a factor of 150. Gain an additional 50 rage for each target hit by this skill. Expertising Sun Tzu increases the number of targets that the skill can hit from 3 to 5, increases damage factor of this skill from 450 to 800, and increases the additional damage to the target(s) from 150 to 200.

Philosophy of War – While leading the garrison of your own city, troops take 7% less damage.

Master Strategist – Take 10% less damage, and infantry units gain 10% increased health.

Ever-changing Tactics – Deal 20% increased skill damage.

Best Commander Pairings for Sun Tzu in Rise of Kingdoms:

  • Open-field: Æthelflæd (Sun Tzu as primary commander)
  • Open-field: Scipio Prime (Sun Tzu as secondary commander) – Sun Tzu’s fourth skill provides 20% increased skill damage, his second skill provides 10% damage reduction and 10% increased health to infantry units, and his Expertised skill deals a Damage Factor of 800 to up to 5 targets and generates additional Rage. All the benefits above from Sun Tzu will complement the high skill damage (Damage Factor 2000) from Scipio’s active skill. Although the benefits from Sun Tzu’s skills are also obtainable from other legendary infantry commanders, the point is an Expertised Sun Tzu is easy to obtain and if you do not have many Expertised legendary infantry commanders, Sun Tzu is a good option.

Without a shadow of doubt, Sun Tzu is the best Epic commander in Rise of Kingdoms. Sun Tzu’s first skill (“Art of War”) is a Rage-builder and deals damage to 5 targets when Sun Tzu is Expertised. For this reason, we recommend to pair Sun Tzu with the Legendary Æthelflæd, whose active skill (“Arrow of Iron”) deals a damage factor of 800 to 5 targets and reduces their attack, defense and health by 30% for 2 seconds. As the game progresses, Sun Tzu will be overshadowed by other Legendary commanders but the Sun Tzu/Æthelflæd pairing may still be useful in events like Sunset Canyon and Golden Kingdom.
