Tariq Ibn Ziyad was an Arabian general of Berber descent who joined the Arabian army following Musa Ibn Nusayr’s conquest of the Berbers.
After joining the army, Tariq quickly made a name for himself, claiming victory in the Battle of Guadalete and conquering the Visigothic Kingdom of Hispania (modern-day Spain). The name “Gibraltar” comes from “Jabal Tariq”, meaning “Mount of Tariq”. But Tariq’s story is also a sad one: after becoming governor of Hispania, he was recalled to Damascus, where he would spend the rest of his days in ignominy.
Tariq Ibn Ziyad is one of the most important generals in the history of the Iberian Peninsula. He showed great skill in warfare, with history books recording his daring landing at what is now Gibraltar. But following his great victory, he would later experience tragedy to match.
