Theodora, wife to Justinian I and Empress of the Eastern Roman Empire, came from humble beginnings, first an actress and then a wool spinner. How she gained the affection of the heir to the Empire, we do not know. Her legacy as an empress who ruled as the virtual equal of her husband, however, is set in stone.
One of Theodora’s most famous accomplishments came in the year 532 with the Nika riots. The emperor and his advisors, thinking the city lost, were preparing to escape into exile. Theodora, however, was able to persuade them to stand and fight, putting down the revolt and paving the way for a rule which made great strides in improving the lives of women throughout the Empire.
