Trajan - Skills, Talent Trees and Commander Pairs

Optimus Princeps

(1548 – 1610) – 62 years

Rarity: LEGENDARY

Civilization: Rome

Talents:

Trajan was the second Emperor of Rome of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty, ruling from 98-117. Born in modern-day Spain, he was the first Emperor to come from beyond the Apennines.

During Trajan’s reign, he oversaw a great expansion of Rome’s borders, the second greatest in the Empire’s history. However, it was his accomplishments as a civic ruler that earned him the love and respect of Rome, including many public building programs, and a welfare program for poor and orphaned children. Near the end of his reign, he built Trajan’s Column, a monument recording his military achievements, under which his ashes were later buried.

In recognition of his many accomplishments, the Roman Senate bestowed on him the title of Optimus Princeps, meaning “the best ruler”.

Review of Commander Trajan:

  • Ways to obtain Trajan commander sculptures: Wheel of Fortune
  • Trajan is a commander that provides buffs (to allies) and debuffs (to enemies) in open-field battles. He does very little damage to enemies. You should only invest in Trajan after you have 3 or 4 strong skill-damaging open-field marches ready.
  • As Trajan is a commander with Leadership talent (with many talents providing boosts if using a mixed troop comprising 3 or more different troop types), to use him effectively as a primary commander, you should set a mixed troop commandeered by Trajan. Depending on the equipment that your equip Trajan with, you should set his mixed troop with a greater proportion (e.g. 90%) of a particular troop type that is boosted most by his equipment (i.e. if using infantry equipment, Trajan’s mixed troop should comprise mostly of infantry troops).

Best Commander Pairings for Trajan:

  • Open-field (early-game): Æthelflæd (Trajan as primary commander)
  • Open-field: Mulan (Trajan as primary commander) – Like Trajan, Mulan provides buffs to your other troops (and debuffs to enemies) in open-field battles. On top of this, Mulan’s second skill (Heart of a Warrior) reduces damage taken by 5%, increasing the survivability of Trajan. When attacked, Mulan’s second skill also has a 20% chance to reduce attacker’s rage by 100. With Trajan’s high tankiness, a Trajan/Mulan march will greatly boost the effectiveness of all your marches in open-field battles.
  • Open-field: Constantine (Trajan as primary commander)
  • Open-field: Expertised Harald Sigurdsson (Trajan as primary commander) – An expertised Harald provides increased 20% counterattack damage dealt on the map and area-of-effect (“AoE”) skill damage. This is a great idea especially if enemies tend to swarm your Trajan in the open-field battles.
  • Sunset Canyon: Mulan (Trajan as primary commander) or Constantine (Trajan as primary commander)
