Queen of Palmyra
(AD 240 – 274) – 34 years
Rarity: LEGENDARY
Civilization: Syria
Talents:
Zenobia, born around 240 CE, was the queen of the Kingdom of Palmyra in modern-day Syria. She was famous for her stunning looks, and for leading Palmyra against the Roman Empire.
In 270, Zenobia launched an invasion of the Roman Empire, taking control of most of the Roman East, and eventually annexing Egypt. Until the middle of 271, although she was still subordinate to Rome in name, her territory had expanded from Ancyra, in central Anatolia, all the way to southern Egypt. Zenobia’s rule in Egypt lasted until 272, when she was defeated by the Roman army. It is said that Zenobia’s end came when she was taken captive by the Roman emperor Aurelian. Another theory states that Aurelian banished her to Rome, where she spent the rest of her life.
Under Zenobia’s rule, intellectuals were highly valued, and many scholars and philosophers were brought to court. She was tolerant of her subjects, and protected their cultural diversity.
